The Korea Coast Guard (KCG) announced that it will strengthen the management of air pollutants generated by ships in line with global trends and public interest in preserving the marine environment and maintaining a pleasant atmosphere.
Dark smoke emitted from vessels has been cited as one of the main culprits for the worsening air quality in port areas. To tackle this problem, the KCG has prepared procedures for frontline staff to conduct on-site inspections. The procedures also include the explanation of the types and causes of air pollutants emitted from ships.
The KCG plans to conduct monitoring and crackdowns continuously under the procedures set up to prevent pollution caused by ships. In addition, it will actively promote ways to reduce air pollutants among ship workers and relevant companies.
"We will continue to inspect and crack down on ships that emit pollutants such as smoke to secure a clean marine environment in port areas," said Kim Han-kyu, Director of the KCG's Marine Pollution Prevention Division.
