The Korea Coast Guard (KCG) announced that it will prepare measures to ramp up its response to smuggling for 2021 and work closely with related agencies at home.
Last year, there were four consecutive smuggling cases using small boats from April to June in Korea.
In particular, it is hightly likely to see the rise in smuggling cases into the country by boat under the guise of leisure activities at this time of the year.
Accordingly, the KCG will prepare comprehensive measures to tackle attepts of illegal entry into the sea and will cooperate with related agencies to crack down on them.
On top of its efforts to strengthen international cooperation with related agencies in neighboring countries, the KCG is planning to expand its monitoring system, raise awareness about illegal immigration and establish a resident reporting network.
Ok Hyun-jin, Director for Foreign Affairs at the KCG, said that "As the restrictions on foreign immigration are more tightened due to COVID-19, it has become more important than ever to maintain our maritime border security. We will do our best to prevent smuggling through the sea."
