KCG conducts intensive crackdowns against transnational organized crime at sea

On 28 Jan, 6 people were arrested and charged with smuggling 1,070 boxes of Chinese cigarretts into Mokpo, Korea after contacting an unknown cargo ship.

 

Transnational maritime crimes are expected to surge during the Lunar New Year holidays, fueled by restrictions on human exchanges between countries and a decrease in the volume of maritime logistics.


The Korea Coast Guard (KCG) announced that it will launch its crackdown on international crimes such as smuggling and drug trafficking.


The crackdown will be conducted against smuggling of equipments for preventing infectious diseases and vaccines, drug trafficking, illegal immigrats in small boats, illegal distribution of agricultural, marine and livestock products, and other international crimes.


Director Ok Hyun-jin of KCG's Foreign Affairs Division said, "All our personnel in charge of foreign affairs will be mobilized in ports and harbors. We will strengthen patrol activities against the criminal activities," adding that "We will strenghthen crackdowns on international criminal activities, which threaten not only the order of the market economy but also people's livelihood and safety."
