The Korea Coast Guard (KCG) announced on January 12 that it recently published a research paper titled “Analysis of paint traces to determine the ship responsible for collision” in the Scientific Reports.
Although ship collision incidents continue to occur, scientific research on evidence has been insufficient.
Against this backdrop, the Chemical Analysis team of the KCG Research Center conducted analysis of evidence collected from both damaged and suspected ships in three actual collision cases.
The analysis paper published by the KCG team set a milestone in maritime scientific investigation by enabling paint traces to be regarded as scientific evidence after years of efforts to sophisticate its analysis methods.
Seo Jeong-mok, Director of the KCG Research Center, said that considering the unique nature of the sea, the most important thing is to win the public’s trust by collecting evidence and analyzing it based on science. "In this sense, this research is meaningful as it will greatly contribute to identifying an offending ship in case of a ship collision."
