The Korea Coast Guard announced on August 8 that it held a video consultation meeting with experts on ship towing to revitalize the private ship towing industry. Nine experts, including marine leisure businesses, representatives of tugboat shipping companies, insurance experts and lawyers, attended the conference to discuss various measures to revitalize the private tugboat industry.
In the case of ships that need to be towed due to engine failure at sea, unlike land, there are not many private companies that can be towed professionally, so there are many cases where the Korea Coast Guard tow. As the number of people using ships on the sea such as water leisure activities and sea fishing is increasing, the demand for tug boats is increasing due to simple failures due to lack of fuel or maintenance of ships.
Therefore, the KCG support more than 900 towing times a year, and the number of towing cases is increasing continuously, putting a heavy burden on maritime security. In order to solve the problem of marine towing, it decided that the private towing industry should be revitalized first, and since July, a group of ship towing experts and officials has been formed to seek ways to revitalize the private towing industry.
Lee Myung-joon, director of the rescue and safety bureau, said, "If the private towing industry is acti vated, the burden on coast guard, who spend a lot of time on marine towing, will be greatly reduced. We will seek ways to revitalize the private towing system."
