In 2019, maritime smuggling crimes cracked down by the Korea Coast Guard recorded the largest number since its opening.
The record high was attributed to the discovery of the largest-ever 100 kilograms of drug cocaine, as well as the increase in smuggling and distribution of drugs, miscellaneous goods and cigarettes that guarantee high profits in the event of a successful smuggling.
According to the Korea Coast Guard, an analysis of the Coast Guard's crackdown on international crimes in 2019 revealed that the number of smugglers who threaten the domestic and foreign industries was 88 cases and 81 cases, and the market price they smuggled amounted to 420 billion won, the highest ever.
By item, drug and livestock products (39 cases) were the most smuggled, followed by miscellaneous goods such as agricultural and livestock products (22 cases), cigarettes (15 cases), clothing and bags (6 cases), food products (3 cases), drugs (1 case), guns (1 case), and other items (1 case), and other items such as public health, safety and life threats were detected.
Drugs (worth 300 billion won) were the highest, followed by miscellaneous goods such as counterfeit luxury goods (74.3 billion won), medicines (40.3 billion won), and cigarettes (5.2 billion won).
