(2019.08.01.) KCG Introducing Vessel Communication Cognition program
Writer 이은섭 Date 2019.12.17

In order to effectively prevent maritime accidents, The KCG is going to establish a system for cognitive analysis of communication voice of ships based on ICT.

According to the KCG, "Vessel Communication Recognition and Analysis System" was selected by the Ministry of Science, as ICT project and is going to rewarded 1 billion won worth of budget for the project. Accordingly, the KCG plans to set up the system on a total of 35 ships, including the Incheon-Gyeongin Maritime Traffic Control Center(VTS), 15 patrol boats, and 20 ferries, towing vessels, by the end of the year and begin pilot operation.

The cognitive analysis of communication voice of ships has the advantage of being able to recognize information such as atmospheric channels, volume and power condition of the other ship's VHF (Very Short Wave Radio Facility) in advance.

At present, it is impossible to respond quickly to urgent situations, such as the collision situation, as it is not known whether the other vessel's communication is on or on which channel it is on.

Once installed, the system is expected to help prevent collisions as vessels can check the status of communication devices in real time and predict the ship's travel route in advance.

In addition, the system includes the automatic texting (STT, Speech to Text) function of the maritime traffic control center, which enables storage and output of the recorded contents based on the time-by-time actions.

This will reduce the number of gaps in the work that usually occur when the VTS operators write their own recordings, which will further improve the efficiency of the operating tasks.

The KCG plan to conduct a trial operation by the end of the year, and analyze the results and performance of the project.
