The National Assembly passed “The Coast Guard Act” which stipulates the organization and scope of duties of the Coast Guard and requires the head of the Coast Guard to be selected through internal promotion.

According to the National Assembly on Monday, the CG Act, which was proposed by Oh Young-hoon of the main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea, who is a member of the National Assembly's Agriculture, Food, Agriculture, Food, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Committee, passed the plenary session of the National Assembly on Tuesday. Unlike the National Police, whose duties, such as protecting people's lives, bodies and properties, were specifically stipulated under the Police Act, the Coast Guard simply stated the scope of their duties as "police and pollution control in the ocean" in the government organization act, but had no organizational act.

The Coast Guard Act, which defines the basic organization and scope of duties of the Coast Guard, defines the maritime police's responsibility to protect people's lives, bodies and properties in the ocean, respond to maritime accidents, protect maritime territory, and maintain order for maritime security. In addition, the Coast Guard designated as its duty as the maritime police's duty to manage search, rescue, ship traffic control, security, anti-terror operations, investigation, preparation and distribution of maritime-related crimes, maritime pollution prevention and prevention activities, and cooperation with foreign government agencies and international organizations.

The Coast Guard Act only allows the appointment of police officers from the Coast Guard to the head of the Coast Guard if they have served above the rank of security chief among police officers from the Coast Guard and those who served KCG for more than 15 years. The passage of the Coast Guard Act provided an institutional basis for the purpose, duty and authority of the Coast Guard.
