Some 60 human rights violators who seduced mentally disabled people and foreigners to work on farms and fishing boats were arrested by the Korea Coast Guard.
In the first half of this year, the Korea Coast Guard carried out a special crackdown on human rights violations, exposing a total of 67 people in 46 cases. By type, violence and injury were the most common among 53 people with 38 cases, followed by four out of two cases of wage exploitation, three out of one case of kidnapping, and one out of one case of forced indecency. Among the victims are seven foreigners, three disabled, and one woman.
The arrested suspect allegedly forced a second-class mentally disabled person living in the same village to work at a farm in Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province, for 19 years from 1998 to 2017. Also, it was revealed that some of the 380,000 won disability allowance that disabled people receive every month was taken away.
A woman in her 40s, who lives in Gunsan, North Jeolla Province, is known to have misappropriated a 50-year-old man suffering from brain lesions after falsely registering her marriage.
"We will continue to crack down on human rights violations against marine workers," said an official of the Korea Coast Guard.
