The Korea Coast Guard indicted 41 laver farmer, including ‘A’(55), without detention, on charges of violating the Fisheries Resources Management Act and confiscated 102,000 tons of mineral hydrochloric acid.
‘A’ is suspected of storing 4,820ℓ of inorganic hydrochloric acid in a container near his home in Incheon, from October last year until recently. It was found that he kept the mineral hydrochloric acid at his laver farm to prevent insect pests and remove foreign substances such as weeds. ‘B’(58), who sold 17,600ℓ of hydrochloric acid to laver farmer without permission in Ansan, was booked without detention in December last year on charges of violating the Chemicals Management Act.
Inorganic hydrochloric acid is a compound that contains more than 10 percent of the hydrogen chloride concentration under the Chemicals Management Act, and is mainly used for industrial use. If discharged into the sea, the marine ecosystem will be destroyed, including the death of fish and shellfish.
However, inorganic hydrochloric acid is often used illegally in fish farms because it is more effective in preventing diseases than active treatment agents (containing less than 10% of hydrogen chloride) that can be used legally in the fishing industry.
